There are generally three reasons why stone tile looks dull:

• The stone tile's finish has worn away.
  • Tiny scratches at the surface can dull stone tile.
• An incorrect topical has been applied to the original tile.
  • Topicals are products like waxes and sealers. These types of product have their place and we have found that most DIYers get themselves in trouble when using topicals on floors because, over time, they ruin the stone's luster. 
• The stone tile is soiled (dirty) and needs a little TLC. 
  • Everything gets dirty. Even sealed stone tile and grout. When cleaning your floors, remember not all cleaning products are created equal. And the method which is used to clean stone tile is just as important. 
    • You can buy ONE stone tile cleaning product that is EASY to use and AFFORDABLE for at least 2 years, regardless of the size of your home. 
  • Don't forget about those rugs too. Dirty rugs can create havoc on the stone's surface.  

About 95% of the time, YES!

We are very confident to say, for most jobs, about 95% of the time, stone can be cleaned and color does come back as long as the right cleaning products are used.   

But you should know, stone does stain:

• Stone, if not sealed properly, can stain. Stone is usually the second most porous area of the tile installation. Grout being #1. Also, all stone isn't created equal, where one stone can be much more porous than another. 
• As there are 100s of cleaning products, there are 100s of sealers manufactured today and not all are created equal either. Please don't think, because you seal a stone, tile or grout area, that you are protected. This is because some sealers offer more protection. 
  • We have experienced head-scatching conversations from so many clients that got themselves into trouble, costing them $1000s in losses. 
  • This is true for both new and old installs. 

Great question and why we are experts!

We clean floors using two methods at once. We scrub every grout joint and stone tile by hand and we use our advanced machine to scrub and suck away the dirt. 

• Using a machine by itself, even ours, doesn't do the best job. You need a little elbow grease.  

Then we flat mop the excess moisture away and place our fans to begin the drying process, immediately. 

All of this has its part in how we continue to look at your floor for soil (dirt) problems before continuing to the next area.

Great questions and so often asked.

Showers are unique in that we use them every day and by introducing so many soaps, oils and shampoo products to them. 

Note: not everything goes down the drainn not even the water.

That stone on your shower floor and wall can stain and absorb water. Darkening of the stone may never go away. You can try not using the shower and see if it dries a lighter color. If it doesn't work, a cleaning and sealer will help but not a solution if the stone is absorbing water. This was an installation mistake that needed to be addressed when installed. 

Sealers can help but don't always give what you hope and is why proper maintenance and care for this area is highly important. 

TIP: dry your shower floor and walls after every shower.

Secrete #1 - Vacuum your stone floors more often than using liquid base cleaners and a mop. 

• Vacuum's suck up dirt and dust from those lower area of the stone & grout.
• Moping with liquid cleaners, even a Swiffer, can pick up dirt but also moves dirt into a stone's recesses and grout joint. Making it harder for you to clean next time. 

Secret #2 - Use neutral Stone and Tile cleaners

This means use cleaner that have a ph of 7 or that are neutral cleaners. Cleaners that are not too acid or alkalinity. Remember this is to maintain the stone, tile and grout surface. The wrongs clean can ruin the stone's surface. Also, neutral cleaners help keep the sealer there for the stone's protection. 

Caution - if you use the wrong cleaners or if the cleaner is too harsh, this will remove any sealer protection that was applied and can turn your stone dull. Making your stone, tile and grout areas vulnerable. :(

Tip #1 - Old school cleaners are hurting stone, tile and grout areas. 

• Vinegar will burn marble and etch its finish.
• Bleach near the wrong stone can also ruin stone.
• Ajax and Comet can stain your stone green.
• Toilet bowl cleaners are way too harsh and can ruin most stone.
• All-purpose cleaners are not really all-purpose.

Note: today products are engineered to do a job. Like the soap we use for your dishwasher is engineered for that machine to clean our dishes. And this soap is different than the soap we use to wash our hands?  Just think about how many soaps we use in the shower. They are all created not equal. 

Tip #2 - Have house cleaners use your stone, tile and grout cleaning products for those areas. The wrong cleaning products can:

• Etch Stone  - removing a stone's surface (sheen)
• Bleach Stone - whiten stone.
• Strip away Grout properties - like remove tile and grout sealers

Note: we know their intention is good. They just don't know and you can't risk that they do.
